 THE GUAYANA CASTLES ½   DAY

 

The way to Guyana’s Castles from the City of Pto. Ordaz is approximately 1 hour of asphalt road, during the way you  will be able to be observe the Hill El Gallo  where the famous battle of San Felix was made in the year of 1.817 assuring therefore the patriotic dominion on the province of Guayana, also will be possible to observe at the distance the Orinoco river way to its opening in the Atlantic Ocean. Continuing with the route through colourful establishments farmers of simple people, amiable agriculturists and fishermen in small scale we’ll arrive to the Castles of Guayana located before the Delta of the Orinoco in the forest reserve of Imataca mountain range in the state of the Delta Amacuro.

The Castles of Guayana were constructed by Spanish conquerors   between the XVII and XVIII centuries to prevent penetration of pirates and buccaneers by the Orinoco towards the interior of the Guayana.

 

THE CASTLE SAN FRANCISCO DE ASIS  OR VILLAPOL  was the  first in been constructed  between the years 1676  and 1682 during in mandate of Governor Tiburcio de Aspa Zúñiga in the same site where was the convent of San Francisco de Asis  closely together of the river on an enormous rock, this convent settled down with the arrival of the first missionaries in 1593 in his interior you will see  three halls named  block de  armament, block of the assistant,   block of the equipment, old canyons used in defence  of Guayana, sentry boxes for monitoring and a hall for cell.

 

THE CASTILLO  OF  SAN DIEGO DE ALCALA OR CAMPO ELIAS (EL PADRASTRO). Its construction started in 1734 under the mandate of then governor Juan de God Valdez and finished in 1747 during mandate of Colonel Diego de Tabares. Getting up at the top of a hill denominated El Padrastro a little more retired from the river and near the lagoons of La Ceiba and El Baratillo, this last one Spaniards communicated it with Rio Orinoco through an artificial channel. This strength reinforced defence and served as support the Castle of San Francisco de Asis in defence of Guayana during the attacks of pirates and buccaneers.During the first presidency of General Joaquin Crespo (1884-1888) the names of Francisco de Asis were changed to Villapol and San Diego de Alcalá to Campo Elias, (Elias Field) as a posthumous tribute to these two Spanish heroes who died fighting forward the independence of Venezuela.
